The Colorado Plateau and Piceance Basin contains the richest source for oil-shales and natural gas in Western Colorado and likely the world. An estimated 1.525 trillion barrels of oil are estimated to be locked in the geologic layer known as the Green River Formation. This area is being processed extensively in conjunction with other national reserves in an effort to achieve US energy independence. At the same time, the Colorado Plateau and Piceance Basin have become a place of study for Geologic Research. The focus of this section is to discuss the geologic layers of Colorado Plateau and to explain the resources, of both the Plateau and the Basin, from a geologic standpoint.
