Located in western Colorado, the Piceance basin is home to some of the nations richest oil reserves. It is the area where most, if not all, of the issues discussed in this course are occuring. The basin is part of the Colorado Plateau and stretches over an area of roughly 7,110 square miles. (Spray et al 2003.)
This map shows the areas of Colorado overlaying the basin. Its entirety is contained in the western portion of the state and is under a number of counties including Delta, Garfield, Gunnison Mesa, Moffat, Montrose, Pitkin, and Rio Blanco. These areas are experiencing a boom of new well sites (Spray et al 2003.)
The oil and gas in this area are sourced from two main zones under the surface.
1. The Green River Formation (Mahogany Zone)
2. Mancos Shale
