Structural Geology Associated with Uintas-Animas Aquifer
Within the Uinta Basin, comprised of the Uinta, Wasatch and Green River Formations, the Uinta-Animas aquifer exists in permeable layers of conglomerate, siltstone and sandstone above an impermeable layer of shale located in the middle of the Uinta Basin. In relation to the Piceance Basin, the depth of the Uinta-Animas aquifer increases towards the middle of the basin, ranging in thickness from zero to as deep as 9,000 feet towards the middle of the aquifer. The rock units range about 200 to 325 feet below the surface; black shale facies being the first layer before sandstone.
